North Macedonia seeks deeper strategic ties with Trump administration
North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has declared that his country is a “key point of American interests in the Balkans” and a strong pillar of support for the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. In an interview with Breitbart News, Mickoski emphasized that the Macedonian government has provided unreserved support to the Trump administration, establishing contact with his team as early as the 2024 campaign.
Mickoski expressed a desire to transform this strategic dialogue into concrete results regarding security, energy, infrastructure, trade, and investment. He specifically highlighted the potential for bilateral trade agreements, including a zero-tariff rate for certain Macedonian products exported to the U.S. Additionally, he noted that North Macedonia serves as a strategic location for the U.S. Air Force in the Balkans.
On the energy front, Mickoski discussed plans to connect North Macedonia to the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece, via new interconnectors. This project aims to facilitate the transport of American LNG to Serbia and Central Europe, potentially providing competition to Russian energy capacities. The Prime Minister also extended an invitation to President Trump to visit the region, noting that support for his administration is exceptionally high among Macedonian citizens.
