Mickoski criticizes Bulgaria over EU integration hurdles

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has accused Bulgaria of utilizing European Union mechanisms to obstruct his country's path toward EU membership. Speaking during commemorations for the Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle, Mickoski stated that Sofia began raising issues regarding the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Macedonian constitution and disputes over historical figures only after joining the EU.

Mickoski proposed a new sequence to break the deadlock: reaching an agreement on an Action Plan for Minorities before proceeding with constitutional amendments. He emphasized that while North Macedonia has already aligned its foreign and security policies with the EU and is delivering on its Reform Agenda, gradual integration should not serve as a substitute for full membership.

At the Berlin Process summit in Montenegro, the Prime Minister expressed hope that North Macedonia's reform achievements would soon be recognized, allowing for the formal start of negotiations. He warned that abandoning negotiations would be a strategic error, as it would forfeit the nation's chance to represent its interests as an equal member within the bloc.
