North Macedonia and Bulgaria begin direct dialogue over EU path

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has expressed optimism regarding the commencement of direct dialogue with Bulgaria, viewing it as the primary path to resolving the diplomatic deadlock affecting the country's EU integration process.

Following a meeting in Sofia on October 8 between Foreign Ministers Timcho Mutuński and Velislava Petova-Chamova, Mickoski stated that while positions remain significantly different, he expects the dialogue to continue and eventually lead to a compromise. He emphasized that the process should move naturally and noted that international partners have been informed of the discussions.

Bulgarian officials, including Foreign Minister Petova-Chamova, have maintained that Sofia has no new conditions but insists on the fulfillment of existing 2022 agreements, specifically regarding constitutional changes that include the Bulgarian community. Bulgaria has requested a specific timeframe for North Macedonia to implement these changes.

Mickoski underscored that North Macedonia will not compromise its national identity, language, or dignity to achieve EU membership, asserting that the country seeks to enter Europe with its head held high rather than through concessions of its heritage.
