Micro and small businesses drive job growth in Pernambuco

Micro and small enterprises (MPEs) were the primary drivers of formal job creation in Pernambuco during the first half of 2026. According to Caged data compiled by Sebrae, MPEs generated 21,790 new formal positions in the state between January and June, contributing to a total state-wide positive balance of 21,411 jobs.

In contrast, medium and large companies saw a reduction of 2,110 formal positions during the same period. The strongest growth within the small business sector occurred in services, construction, and the manufacturing industry. Specifically, the services sector added 10,944 jobs, while construction accounted for 9,381.

Economic analysts noted that growth in the construction sector was bolstered by the real estate market and the expansion of the 'Minha Casa Minha Vida' program. The services sector saw increases in administrative services and road freight delivery. Conversely, the agribusiness sector experienced the largest contractions in small business hiring, with a loss of 542 jobs over the six-month period.
