Microdrama industry expands globally via mobile-first vertical video

Microdrama, a format of ultra-short, vertically filmed episodic series designed for smartphones, is rapidly evolving into a significant global industry. Originally gaining traction in Asia, the trend has expanded into markets including the United States, India, and Vietnam.

These series typically feature episodes lasting between 45 seconds and a few minutes, utilizing high-paced storytelling and frequent cliffhangers to maintain viewer engagement during ‘micro moments’ of daily life. The format relies on immediate conflict and emotional rewards, often bypassing traditional character development in favor of rapid plot progression.

In China, the industry has reached a massive scale; as of December 2024, approximately 662 million people were consuming microdramas, representing nearly 60% of internet users. The sector is characterized by low production costs, short development cycles, and direct monetization through digital platforms. Industry experts suggest that microdrama will coexist with long-form content, serving as a ‘T20 moment’ for the digital content economy by catering to mobile-first consumption patterns.
