Microbial research reveals extreme survival limits in heat and alkaline environments

Scientists have identified a new species of amoeba, Incendiamoeba cascadensis, capable of thriving in temperatures as high as 63 degrees Celsius. Discovered in the geothermal streams of Lassen Volcanic National Park in California, this unicellular organism breaks previous records for eukaryotic survival in extreme heat.

In a separate study published in Science Advances, researchers led by the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich demonstrated that certain terrestrial microorganisms can grow and produce methane in environments mimicking the subsurface ocean of Saturn's moon, Enceladus. The experiments showed that microbial metabolism can function in highly alkaline conditions, with a pH reaching 11, expanding the known parameters for potential habitability in our solar system.
