Microbiologists advise frequent towel washing to prevent bacteria buildup

Microbiological research suggests that towels should be washed frequently to prevent the buildup of microorganisms. Studies indicate that towels collect dirt, skin cells, and moisture, creating an environment where microbes can thrive.

Research into toilet aerosols shows that flushing—even with the lid closed—can spread particles and bacteria into the air. Microbiologist Professor Charles Gerba suggests that towels may need washing as often as every 48 hours to avoid significant bacterial contamination. He noted that using a two-day-old towel to dry one's face could potentially result in more E. coli exposure than flushing a toilet.
