Microbiome Profiles Linked to Human Biological Aging in New Studies
Researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the John A. Burns School of Medicine analyzed stool samples from 123 Hawaiian participants and identified specific gut bacteria associated with the rate of biological aging. The presence of *Bifidobacterium adolescentis* correlated with slower aging, while *Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens* was linked to accelerated aging, as measured by the DunedinPACE blood biomarker.
A separate investigation highlighted the oral microbiome’s connection to cellular aging. The study reported that individuals with periodontitis exhibited shorter telomeres in immune cells and gum tissue, suggesting that oral bacterial composition may influence systemic aging processes. Both findings point to the microbiome—gut and oral—as potential targets for interventions aimed at promoting healthier, longer lives.
