Microcar insurance costs in France often exceed leasing fees
Insurance costs for microcars (voitures sans permis) in France are frequently exceeding the monthly cost of vehicle leasing. While insurance is mandatory for all motor vehicles on public roads, microcar drivers do not benefit from the standard bonus/malus system applied to traditional car drivers.
Using the Citroën Ami, the most popular model in France, as an example, a 36-month lease with 5,000 km per year costs approximately 80.81 euros per month. However, insurance premiums can be significantly higher. While advertised rates for the Ami range between 35 and 170 euros per month, actual costs for adolescent drivers often exceed 150 euros per month, making the insurance more expensive than the lease itself.
