Microcinemas and new sci-fi series emerge in major urban centers
A new cultural trend of microcinemas is developing in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto. These small-scale venues, often housed in repurposed spaces like former barbershops or retail stores, typically feature between 20 and 40 seats. Unlike large multiplexes, these establishments offer curated programming including classic films, rare documentaries, independent productions, and 16mm film screenings, reflecting the personal tastes of the owners.
In Ridgewood, Queens, the Low Cinema was opened in early 2025 by director John Wilson, Davis Fowlkes, and Cosmo Bjorkenheim. Located in a former barbershop, the venue utilizes vintage decor and second-hand seating to recreate a neighborhood cinema experience.
In the entertainment industry, Amazon Prime Video has released a trailer for ‘Blade Runner 2099’, a new series based on the science fiction franchise. Set 50 years after the events of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ in a transformed Los Angeles, the series follows a fugitive named Cora who teams up with a replicant to hunt a target that holds secrets capable of destabilizing the city. The series is scheduled for release on Prime Video in late November.
