Microlearning uses short educational units to combat fragmented attention

Microlearning is emerging as a method to address the challenges of fragmented attention caused by smartphones and social media. This approach utilizes small, manageable segments of information known as ‘learning units.’

These units are designed to be brief, typically lasting from a few seconds to fifteen minutes, allowing them to be integrated into short breaks throughout the day. This format aims to reduce the tendency to procrastinate on educational tasks.

While schools and institutions are increasingly providing structured microlearning content, neuroscientist Stefano Sandrone of Imperial College London notes that research is still needed to determine which specific competencies and knowledge types are most effective for microlearning across different educational stages, from university to lifelong learning.
