Micromobility regulations shift for e-scooters in US parks and Canada
Regulatory approaches to electric micromobility devices are shifting in both Canada and the United States. In the United States, the National Park Service (NPS) has announced new rules for “powered micromobility devices,” including e-scooters, electric skateboards, and Segways. Previously categorized similarly to motor vehicles, these devices may now be permitted on sidewalks and paved paths at the discretion of park superintendents, though wilderness areas remain off-limits.
In British Columbia, Canada, the Community of Sun Rivers Owners' Association has issued an awareness notice regarding the increasing use of e-scooters by young people. Citing injury data from BC Children’s Hospital, which shows that children aged 13 to 15 account for 54 per cent of e-scooter-related emergency visits, the association is urging parents to ensure riders follow provincial regulations. Current B.C. rules require riders on public roads to be at least 16 years old, wear a helmet, and use devices limited to 25 km/h with motors not exceeding 500 watts.
