Micron and Crucial face scrutiny over SSD warranty claims
Micron and its consumer brand, Crucial, are facing scrutiny following reports that they are struggling to honor warranties for faulty SSDs. A customer reported that a Crucial X10 Pro 4TB external SSD failed after using only 1% of its estimated lifespan, despite critical failure warnings from the company’s own software.
In response to a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) request, Crucial reportedly stated that because the consumer business is closing, production of all components—including portable SSDs and M.2 NVMe SSDs—has ceased and inventory is depleted. Consequently, the company offered a refund of the original purchase price rather than a replacement unit.
This has sparked controversy because the original purchase price may not cover the current market cost of an equivalent drive, which has risen due to global component shortages. While the user requested an internal M.2 SSD as an alternative replacement, the company maintained that no replacements are available due to the discontinuation of the consumer lineup.
