Micron Begins 1α DRAM Production in Virginia, Expanding US Memory Supply

Micron has started manufacturing its 1α (1-alpha) DRAM chips at the Manassas, Virginia fabrication plant, marking "the most advanced memory technology ever produced in the United States." The new node supports DDR4 and LP4 products for automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, networking and medical applications. Micron expects qualified output by the end of 2026 and the $2 billion investment will quadruple DDR4 wafer supply at the site.

The Virginia expansion is part of Micron’s broader $200 billion U.S. investment plan, which also includes projects in Boise, Idaho and Clay, New York. Together the projects could create around 90,000 jobs and include more than $325 million for workforce development and semiconductor education. Officials highlighted the strategic importance of domestic long‑lifecycle memory for supply‑chain resilience and national security.
