Micron secures multi-year memory chip supply agreement with General Motors
Micron Technology and General Motors have signed a multi‑year strategic customer agreement to provide memory and storage components for GM’s connected‑vehicle platform. The deal covers LPDDR5 DRAM, UFS 3.1 storage (and related NOR Flash) chips that will support GM’s Ultifi software‑defined vehicle architecture and future AI‑driven features such as advanced driver‑assistance systems.
The partnership is part of GM’s effort to lock down key semiconductor supplies after the 2021‑22 chip shortage, and Micron’s move to diversify its revenue base with take‑or‑pay contracts that give the chipset maker more visibility in a cyclic market. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra noted the agreement reinforces the company’s expanding U.S. manufacturing footprint, including the upgraded Manassas, Virginia DRAM plant. GM CEO Mary Barra said the collaboration enhances supply‑chain resilience and ensures reliable component delivery for upcoming models.
Micron now counts this as one of its 16 strategic customer agreements, each averaging about five years, providing a revenue floor while the automotive memory market heats up.
