Micron Technology faces potential Taiwan strikes over bonus disputes
Labor unions representing approximately 10,000 employees at Micron Technology's facilities in Taoyuan and Taichung, Taiwan, are preparing for potential strike action. An internal survey indicates that roughly 80% of union members support industrial action due to disagreements over the company's Incentive Pay Plan (IPP).
The union argues that the current bonus structure lacks transparency and does not adequately reflect the company's record-breaking profitability driven by the global AI boom. Specifically, workers are demanding a one-time special bonus for fiscal year 2026 and a transition to a profit-sharing model starting in fiscal 2027, where 15% of operating profits would be allocated to bonuses and distributed quarterly. They noted that competitors like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix utilize more transparent profit-sharing models.
Taiwan is a critical hub for Micron, accounting for about 60% of its global production capacity, including essential DRAM and High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) manufacturing. A significant work stoppage could disrupt global semiconductor supply chains, particularly for AI data centers.
Micron has responded by stating that its team's contributions are the foundation of its success. The company announced it will issue its highest performance bonuses to date this year and expects to release further details regarding the IPP in October. Formal labor mediation is expected to begin in mid-September.
