Memory chip shortage expected to persist through 2027 due to AI demand
The semiconductor industry is facing a prolonged shortage of memory chips, driven primarily by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. Major manufacturers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, have reportedly sold out their DRAM and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) production capacity through 2027.
Industry leaders suggest the supply-demand imbalance will persist for years. The CEO of Phison anticipates that NAND memory shortages could last at least four years as new facilities take time to come online. Similarly, Micron executives have warned that tight conditions are expected to continue beyond 2027, with 2027 potentially being more constrained than 2026.
This shortage is expected to impact consumer markets, potentially leading to higher prices and delivery delays for personal computers, mobile devices, and gaming consoles. In the enterprise sector, AI-driven demand is projected to consume nearly 70% of total DRAM capacity.
Amidst these market shifts, Micron recently saw a legal victory as a U.S. court dismissed a lawsuit from China's Yangtze Memory Technologies regarding alleged false security claims. Financially, Micron reported significant growth, with fiscal third-quarter revenue reaching $41.5 billion.
