Micron Technology faces market volatility amid AI memory demand shifts
Micron Technology and its industry peers are experiencing significant market volatility as investors reassess the long-term demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. While Micron has seen massive growth driven by the memory chip shortage—specifically in DRAM and NAND—recent trading saw shares drop nearly 6% amid concerns that AI spending could decelerate.
Despite the stock volatility, Micron management has indicated that supply constraints are expected to persist. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated that tight conditions for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) are “locked in to persist beyond calendar 2027” due to AI-driven demand. The company has reported significant revenue growth in its fiscal third quarter, fueled by rising average selling prices for memory products.
However, analysts point to potential risks. Some highlight Nvidia’s influence on the sector, noting that Nvidia’s future design choices regarding memory types could impact the demand for premium stacked memory. Additionally, while Nvidia has disclosed massive supply commitments tied to memory, these are plans that could be revised if AI infrastructure spending shifts.
