Micron Technology shares surge on AI memory demand

Micron Technology is experiencing significant growth and stock price appreciation driven by the global artificial intelligence boom. The company has seen its shares rise sharply, with some reports noting a nearly 10% rally over two days, as investors anticipate strong fiscal fourth-quarter results on September 30.

Demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM3E) and DRAM is outpacing supply, with some analysts suggesting high-bandwidth memory could remain sold out through 2027. This demand is fueled by the rapid adoption of generative AI and large-scale foundational models in data centers. Analysts from firms such as Stifel and RBC Capital have maintained bullish outlooks, citing a structural extension of the current memory upcycle.

On the operational front, Micron has reached a milestone with the commencement of production at its plant in Sanand, India, which is part of a $2.75 billion investment to diversify its manufacturing footprint. However, the company faces ongoing labor negotiations with unions at its facility in Taiwan. Additionally, while near-term pricing remains robust, analysts note that Chinese competitors like CXMT and YMTC may pose structural supply challenges by 2027.
