SK Hynix approves $38 B investment in new memory chip plants in South Korea

South Korea’s SK Hynix board approved about 54.3 trillion won (approximately $38 billion) of investment through 2031 to build two new memory‑chip fabrication plants. The plan allocates 35.2 trillion won for the second phase of the Yongin Y2 fab, which will produce DRAM and high‑bandwidth memory (HBM), and 19.1 trillion won for the Cheongju M17 fab, which will produce NAND flash memory. Construction of the Yongin facility is slated to start in July 2027 with its first cleanroom expected in June 2029, while work on the Cheongju plant should begin in February 2027 and its first cleanroom is targeted for December 2028. The investment is part of a broader strategy that includes up to 600 trillion won for the Yongin semiconductor cluster and 100 trillion won to expand the Cheongju base, aimed at meeting the surging demand for AI‑driven memory, especially HBM used in AI accelerators. After the announcement, SK Hynix shares fell about 5 % on the day, though analysts said the move does not pose an immediate threat to rivals such as Micron.
