Micron Technology unveils world's first 512GB DDR5 memory module
Micron Technology has unveiled the world’s first 512GB DDR5 memory module, a technical milestone designed specifically for data centers and high-performance server platforms. The module utilizes vertical DRAM chip stacking and micro-connections to achieve speeds of up to 9,200 MT/s. This technology is intended to support large-scale artificial intelligence models, massive data analysis, and giant databases, potentially allowing a single two-processor server to hold up to 12 terabytes of memory.
Beyond capacity, the new module offers significant efficiency gains. A single 512GB module consumes approximately 60% less power than four 128GB modules combined, reducing power draw from 44.2 watts to 16 watts. The component has already been validated on platforms from AMD and Intel, with mass production expected to begin in the second half of 2027.
To support this strategic shift toward specialized enterprise components, Micron has reorganized its leadership team. Deirdre Hanford has been appointed Corporate Vice President and President of Micron Research Labs to lead long-term research. This follows recent appointments of Manish Bhatia as President and Chief Operating Officer, and Dr. Scott DeBoer as President and Chief Technology and Products Officer.
