Micron to invest $10B in new U.S. AI memory research hub

Micron Technology has announced the establishment of Micron Research Labs, a new long-term research and development organization based in the United States. The company plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade to advance next-generation memory technologies, memory-compute architectures, advanced packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the hub aims to drive innovation for the AI era by looking beyond current product roadmaps. The initiative will include a flagship campus in Boise, with construction expected to begin in 2027, and will feature collaborations with universities, government agencies, startups, and other semiconductor companies. The lab will also connect with Micron’s existing research footprints in Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan.

CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated that the investment is intended to shape the future of memory and compute systems required for the AI economy. The project has received support from various industry leaders and academic institutions, including NVIDIA, Apple, Applied Materials, Lam Research, imec, Stanford University, and the University of Texas at Austin.
