Micronutrient supplementation needs vary by lifestyle and age

Medical experts and research institutions are evaluating the necessity and risks of micronutrient supplementation across different demographics.

For recreational athletes, the need for supplements is not determined solely by training volume but by a combination of lifestyle factors, including diet, stress, and sleep quality. Dr. Claudia Steigleder-Schweiger notes that while exercise increases micronutrient demand, existing deficiencies in the general population can impact athletic performance and recovery. Symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and poor concentration are often non-specific, making diagnostic clarity essential.

In the context of aging populations, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has conducted an analysis regarding the benefits and risks of micronutrient supplements for older individuals to determine if they are necessary to meet nutritional requirements.
