Microplastic Pollution Risks Health: Italian Society Offers 10 Protection Tips
Microplastics—particles smaller than 5 mm and nano‑sized fragments—are now detected in water, food, air and virtually every human tissue. Studies cited by the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI) indicate that these particles can trigger gastrointestinal disturbances, reproductive problems, cancer‑related changes, neurological effects such as brain fog, and cardiovascular issues, including the presence of plastics in atherosclerotic plaques.
SIMI President Professor Giorgio Sesti recommends ten personal‑level actions to reduce exposure, focusing on dietary choices, avoiding bottled water, limiting consumption of heavily processed foods, and reducing the use of synthetic textiles. The society stresses that microplastics also bind toxic substances like pesticides and heavy metals, amplifying health risks.
In a related interview, Professor Umberto Cornelli of Loyola University Chicago describes a “microplastic syndrome” characterized by persistent fatigue, headaches and reduced concentration. He estimates daily human intake of 1–2 mg of micro‑ and nanoplastics, primarily via food, and notes their detection in blood, brain, liver, kidneys, placenta and breast milk. Cornelli urges further research while urging individuals to limit exposure through informed food and product choices.
