Microplastics detected in human brain tissue for the first time

An international team of scientists has identified the presence of microplastics within human brain tissue for the first time. By analyzing the olfactory bulbs of 15 deceased individuals, researchers found microplastic residues in eight of the subjects.

Polypropylene was the most frequently detected polymer. The particles, ranging in size from 5.5 to 26.4 micrometers, may reach the brain through anatomical pathways in the nasal cavity. While the exact health implications remain unknown, researchers noted that the presence of these synthetic materials raises questions regarding potential neurotoxicity and the risk of neuronal damage.
