Microplastics detected in human hip bone tissue
A collaborative study between IEU Medical Point Hospital and Sabancı University has detected microplastic particles in human bone tissue. Researchers analyzed 10 bone tissue samples obtained from patients undergoing surgery for hip fractures, finding microplastics in seven of them.
The analysis, conducted at the Sabancı University Nanotechnology Institute, revealed that the particles were consistent with polymers used in PET bottles and various other plastic products. This study marks the first time such particles have been identified in hip bone tissue in scientific literature, adding to previous findings of microplastics in human blood, brain, and lung tissues.
Lead researchers Dr. Mehmet Kaymakoğlu and Dr. Mert Filibeli emphasized that the findings serve as a warning regarding human health. The research team intends to investigate in future stages which specific bone diseases these particles may cause.
