Microplastics exposure and methods for household reduction
Microplastics, particles smaller than 5 millimeters, and even smaller nanoplastics are increasingly found in food, water, and air. Research has highlighted potential health concerns, including a 2024 study suggesting an association between plastic particles in artery plaque and increased risks of heart attack, stroke, or death. Additionally, a 2024 study noted higher concentrations of these particles in prostate tumors compared to noncancerous tissue.
While total elimination is not possible, exposure can be mitigated through several proactive steps. Recommended methods include reducing household dust, using glass food storage containers instead of plastic, and installing drinking water filtration systems certified to reduce microplastic presence. These particles often originate from the breakdown of larger items like synthetic fabrics, soda bottles, and food storage bags.
