Microplastics found in human cerebrospinal fluid linked to neurodegenerative risks

A study by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore) has demonstrated for the first time the presence of micro and nanoplastics in human cerebrospinal fluid. These particles are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, potentially poisoning neurons and altering cellular balance.

Scientific evidence suggests a link between high levels of these particles in the central nervous system and an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, including Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. Exposure occurs primarily through the ingestion and inhalation of plastic waste particles found in food, air, and water.

In coastal regions like the Amalfi Coast, the accumulation of plastic waste from maritime activities and tourism contributes to the degradation of materials into these microscopic particles. This environmental pollution poses a direct threat to human health as the particles accumulate in areas such as the frontal cortex.
