Microplastics in Switzerland: 219 tons deposited annually via atmosphere

A systematic study conducted by researchers from Empa, Eawag, and Agroscope has revealed the extent of microplastic pollution entering the Swiss environment via the atmosphere. The research indicates that approximately 219 tons of microplastic particles are deposited annually on areas below 2,000 meters in altitude.

Of this total, roughly 78 tons land on agricultural soils and 10 tons enter lakes and rivers. The particles, which range in diameter from 20 to 215 micrometers, are distributed by wind after being broken down by UV radiation, precipitation, and ozone.

Measurements taken across various locations showed significant regional differences. Zurich recorded an average of 881 particles per square meter per day, more than double the rates found in other locations such as Dübendorf, Magadino, Payerne, and Chaumont, which ranged between 249 and 331 particles. Researchers attribute the higher concentration in Zurich to dense population, traffic, and the presence of plastic products in outdoor spaces.
