Microsoft adds option to disable Windows Copilot keyboard key

Microsoft introduced a dedicated Copilot key on many Windows 11 laptops in 2024, replacing the traditional Right Control key. Users reported workflow disruptions and loss of familiar shortcuts, prompting complaints.

A new hidden setting discovered in the Windows Insider program allows the Copilot key to be turned off completely. The option, labeled “Do nothing,” disables the key’s function regardless of press duration. Microsoft’s support documentation says the change can be made via Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard (or Settings > Personalization > Text input). The rollout timing has not been announced, but the setting is expected to reach the public in the coming weeks.

Disabling the key does not remove the Copilot application itself; fully disabling the service on managed devices requires meeting additional criteria, such as not launching the app for 28 days.
