Microsoft and EA stop sharing digital sales data
Microsoft and Electronic Arts (EA) have ceased sharing digital sales data with Circana, a major US-based market research firm formerly known as NPD Group. Microsoft’s decision covers its entire gaming portfolio, including Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard.
This move means that digital sales figures for major franchises, such as Call of Duty and EA Sports titles, will no longer be reported in Circana’s industry measurements. By withholding this data, Microsoft and EA join Nintendo, which has kept its digital eShop figures private for several years.
As the gaming industry continues its long-term shift from physical media to digital storefronts, the lack of transparency poses challenges for independent analysts, journalists, and consumers. The reduction in available data makes it increasingly difficult to accurately assess the commercial success of major game releases.
