Microsoft and Netflix negotiations fail over Xbox IP deal
Negotiations between Microsoft and Netflix for an exclusive seven-year deal to adapt Xbox video game franchises into films and television series have reportedly collapsed. According to reports from Puck, Netflix initially offered approximately $500 million for the rights, but Microsoft countered with a demand for $800 million.
The breakdown is attributed to the significant $300 million valuation gap and internal leadership changes at Netflix, including the departure of Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. While a massive, exclusive package was rejected, the two companies continue to collaborate on specific projects, including upcoming animated series for ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Diablo’, as well as a ‘Gears of War’ adaptation.
Following the failed negotiations, Microsoft’s Xbox division, specifically its new XP department, is expected to pursue smaller, non-exclusive licensing deals with various media partners rather than a single global provider.
