Microsoft and NVIDIA launch RTX Spark and Surface Laptop Ultra for local AI

Microsoft and NVIDIA have announced a major hardware and software collaboration to enable local AI processing on Windows PCs through the new RTX Spark architecture. This partnership aims to shift AI workloads from the cloud to the device, allowing users to run complex models locally.

Key hardware announcements include the Surface Laptop Ultra, which features an NVIDIA Grace CPU and Blackwell RTX GPU. The laptop supports up to 128 GB of unified memory and provides up to 1 petaflop of AI computing power. It is designed for developers and creators, with a starting price of $2,599 and shipping scheduled for October 16. Additionally, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact $5,999 workstation optimized for AI development.

On the software side, Microsoft is introducing Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) to provide a secure, isolated environment for AI agents to operate within Windows 11. The company is also redesigning Windows Search to function more like a command-driven interface, allowing users to perform system actions—such as toggling dark mode or adjusting volume—directly through text commands. This initiative, termed 'Hybrid Intelligence,' seeks to optimize performance by balancing on-device and cloud-based AI capabilities.
