Microsoft optimizes Windows 11 for improved responsiveness and memory efficiency
Microsoft has introduced a series of optimizations for Windows 11 aimed at improving system responsiveness and memory efficiency, particularly for devices with 8GB of RAM or less. The company reports that these updates can make the operating system up to 20% more responsive in key areas such as the Start menu, File Explorer, and Windows Search.
A primary technical improvement involves enhanced memory management, allowing the system to keep up to 2GB more active data in physical RAM rather than moving it to slower virtual storage. For low-memory systems, Microsoft is also implementing lazy-loading for Widgets, which will only load upon user request, potentially freeing up over 200MB of memory.
Additionally, the Windows Search experience is being redesigned to support natural language commands and inline actions. This allows users to perform system tasks—such as toggling dark mode, adjusting brightness, or managing Bluetooth—directly from the search bar without navigating through settings menus. The Photos app is also receiving updates, including a redesigned editor and improved loading speeds for various image formats.
