Microsoft announces Windows 11 taskbar changes and Edge update cycle shift

Microsoft has announced several updates for its Windows and Edge ecosystems. For Windows 11, upcoming updates will reintroduce the ability to position the taskbar on all sides of the screen, addressing a long-standing user criticism. Additionally, a new “Small” size option for the taskbar will be available, and the company is introducing “Administrator Protection” to enhance security by improving permission separation, potentially supplementing or replacing the traditional User Account Control (UAC).

Regarding the Microsoft Edge browser, version 152 marks a shift to a faster two-week update cycle. This release includes improved interoperability, such as Apple Sign-in support for Windows and macOS. Microsoft is also preparing for deeper Google account integration, with Google account login expected in September 2026 and expanded data import features planned for November 2026. The update also addresses numerous security vulnerabilities within the Chromium project and Microsoft’s own code.
