Microsoft Auto SR expands support to Intel Panther Lake processors

Microsoft has announced that its NPU-based super resolution technology, Auto SR, is now supported on Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, specifically the Panther Lake architecture. This expansion allows Intel-based Copilot+ PCs to utilize NPU power to upscale game imagery, reducing the workload on the GPU.

Unlike traditional upscaling methods that require individual game developer integration, Auto SR connects directly to the Windows display pipeline. This enables the technology to work with DirectX 10, 11, and 12 games without requiring specific updates from developers. The technology functions by processing games at a lower resolution and using the NPU and integrated GPU to upscale the image to the display resolution, aiming to maintain fluid frame rates while improving visual detail.

Technical requirements for Auto SR include Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, updated graphics and NPU drivers, and a minimum display resolution of 1080p. While Auto SR offers broad compatibility, Microsoft recommends that users prioritize native manufacturer solutions, such as Intel XeSS, if they are available within a specific game, as first-party integrations remain the optimal choice for performance and quality.
