Microsoft restructures Xbox division with major layoffs and studio shifts
Microsoft is undergoing a massive restructuring of its Xbox gaming division, aimed at improving profitability and sustainability. The plan involves significant workforce reductions, with the company targeting approximately 3,200 job cuts by the end of the fiscal year. A recent wave of layoffs has already impacted 268 roles across Halo Studios, various first-party studios, and management functions.
As part of the reorganization, several major studio shifts are occurring. The development of the next Halo game is being transferred to a dedicated team within Activision. Additionally, Activision will now manage the Rare and World’s Edge studios. Obsidian Entertainment is being integrated into the Bethesda group, while Playground Games and Turn 10 are merging into a single studio to focus on the Fable and Forza brands. Some studios, such as Undead Labs, have transitioned to becoming independent entities.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed optimism regarding these changes, describing the streamlining process as “great to see.” He emphasized his confidence in the company’s intellectual property portfolio and its ability to produce high-quality games across both PC and Xbox platforms as the division seeks to return to growth in the upcoming fiscal year.
