Microsoft confirms IE mode support through 2029

Microsoft has confirmed that Internet Explorer (IE) mode within Microsoft Edge will remain supported until at least the end of 2029. The announcement, made via the Microsoft 365 Message Center, serves as a notice to IT administrators regarding the timeline for modernizing legacy enterprise applications.

IE mode utilizes the older Trident rendering engine to allow businesses to run internal portals and management systems that are incompatible with modern Chromium-based browsers. While the end of 2029 is currently a support floor, Microsoft stated it will provide at least one year of formal notice before the mode is officially retired.

Administrators are encouraged to identify business-critical applications that still require the legacy engine and evaluate whether they should be updated, replaced, or rebuilt using modern web technologies. Microsoft also noted that the Microsoft App Assure program is available to assist eligible customers with compatibility issues.
