Microsoft identifies RGB lighting driver conflict causing Windows 11 game crashes
Microsoft has identified a conflict between the Windows 11 August security update (KB5121003) and RGB lighting software. The issue affects users on versions 24H2 and 25H2, causing games to crash, freeze, or trigger system reboots. Specifically, the problem is linked to low-level drivers or components with file names similar to ‘inpoutx64’ used by various RGB peripherals and internal components.
Several high-profile titles have been confirmed as affected, including ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and THE FINALS. Symptoms reported by users include the ‘EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION’ error and unexpected system restarts. Industry speculation suggests the conflict may arise when anti-cheat systems attempt to intercept these kernel-level drivers.
Microsoft has not yet released a permanent fix but has provided a temporary workaround. Users can manually disable the problematic driver via the Windows Registry by navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64 and changing the ‘Start’ value to 4. However, this may cause RGB lighting functionality to cease working. Microsoft is continuing its investigation to find a definitive solution.
