Microsoft confronts Windows 11 RAM shortfall on Surface Laptop and rolls out TPM‑based anti‑piracy

Microsoft's 13‑inch Surface Laptop, priced near $950, ships with a Snapdragon X Plus processor, 256 GB NVMe storage and only 8 GB LPDDR5X RAM. Independent testing shows Windows 11 consumes over 4 GB of memory, leaving insufficient headroom for everyday tasks and causing frequent freezes during basic activities such as web browsing and video calls. Reviewers praised the device’s build quality and battery life but noted the limited RAM makes it unsuitable for modern multitasking.

Separately, Microsoft announced a new "TPM‑based attestation" feature to curb illegal Windows activations. Starting with the next Windows Server release, enterprises must use the Trusted Platform Module to cryptographically verify that a KMS host has not been altered before it can activate Windows licenses. The change will be mandatory for Windows Server 2025 customers by August 2026, giving organizations time to update their activation infrastructure and aiming to make piracy more difficult.
