Microsoft merges Copilot apps to prepare for AI super app

Microsoft is merging its consumer Copilot app with Microsoft 365 Copilot to create a unified experience, serving as a precursor to a planned AI ‘super app’ expected to launch by the end of September. The consolidation aims to reduce fragmentation between personal and professional AI use, allowing users to switch between accounts while keeping data strictly separated. The rollout begins with mobile and web platforms in mid-August, followed by Windows and macOS in mid-September.

As part of this strategic shift, Microsoft is retiring several features that failed to gain significant traction. Effective August 18, the company will discontinue Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat, Deep Research, and experimental features from Copilot Labs. Additionally, the animated AI mascot Mico, which provided an emotive face for voice interactions, is being removed from the core Copilot experience. Mico will instead be transitioned to the Learn Live platform to serve as an educational tutor.

The reorganization is being led by Jacob Andreou, who oversees consumer AI products, as the company seeks to optimize Copilot for productivity and real-world outcomes. The upcoming super app is expected to integrate conversational AI, coding assistance via GitHub Copilot, and new autonomous agent capabilities.
