Microsoft Copilot Studio is utilizing a multi-agent workflow to automate complex business processes, such as turning research into executable project plans. This approach employs an orchestrator or parent agent that breaks down goals into specific tasks and delegates them to specialized sub-agents, including researchers, analysts, planners, and presentation creators.
These specialized agents can be implemented as child agents or connected agents. Connected agents operate with their own instructions, tools, and knowledge bases, allowing them to be reused across different parent agents. This architecture supports agent-to-agent (A2A) calls and integrates with Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft 365 to provide enterprise-level context, such as reasoning over internal documents and analytics.
Key benefits of this multi-agent pattern include increased specialization, scalability, and improved governance through separate permissions. For example, an IT request scenario can be managed by a parent help agent that delegates specific tasks, like laptop procurement, to a dedicated IT request agent, ensuring tasks are handled within appropriate security and knowledge boundaries.
