Microsoft data center contract overridden by Wisconsin regulator order

Microsoft signed a 15‑year electric service agreement with We Energies for its Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin data center. The contract includes a clause that limits the location of power plants serving the facility to eastern Wisconsin or Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

In May, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission voted to remove those geographic restrictions, allowing Microsoft to source wind power from the broader Midwest. We Energies said it will comply with the commission’s order rather than the outdated contract language while it works with the commission to resolve the discrepancy. The dispute highlights tensions between data‑center operators seeking flexible, renewable energy sources and regulators concerned about grid reliability and local plant placement.
