Microsoft debuts LiteBox library OS in Rust

Microsoft has released the first numbered version, 0.1.0, of LiteBox, a library operating system written in the Rust programming language. Designed to move away from traditional monolithic kernels or microkernels, LiteBox aims to drastically reduce the attack surface by utilizing extreme isolation and hardware virtualization.

Engineers in Redmond developed the project for application isolation, supporting both kernel and user modes. The architecture allows for various compatibility interfaces across different execution environments, including platforms utilizing Linux Virtualization Based Security (LVBS). Rather than acting as a traditional hypervisor or guest kernel, LiteBox functions as a software layer that controls and limits interactions with the underlying platform. The use of Rust is intended to eliminate entire classes of memory management vulnerabilities.
