Microsoft declines immediate native transparency slider for Windows 11

Microsoft has indicated that it will not immediately introduce a native transparency slider for Windows 11, a feature recently popularized by Apple’s ‘Liquid Glass’ interface. March Rogers, Microsoft’s Partner Director of Design, stated that any large-scale visual changes must undergo rigorous analysis regarding usability, accessibility, and overall system impact. He noted that the company prefers to ensure a high-quality experience for all users before implementing such features.

While native support is not imminent, Microsoft acknowledged the work of third-party developers, such as the Windhawk project, which currently allows users to customize transparency and achieve a glass-like aesthetic.

Beyond interface aesthetics, Microsoft is focusing on broader system improvements. These include modernizing legacy UI components through the WinUI 3 framework to create a more consistent design language and addressing resource management issues. For instance, the company is working to improve memory efficiency, as some current native applications, like the Windows Weather app, have been criticized for high RAM consumption compared to competitors.
