Microsoft developing remote power controls for Windows 11 via Android

Microsoft is developing new remote management features for Windows 11 through its Link to Windows application for Android. Code analysis reveals that users may soon be able to shut down, restart, or put their computers into sleep mode directly from their smartphones.

Beyond basic power controls, the discovered code includes a RemoteControlManager component that allows for installing pending Windows updates before a restart or shutdown is executed. This feature aims to simplify system maintenance by allowing users to manage updates without being physically present at the machine.

Technical limitations have been noted in the code, specifically regarding sleep mode. If a user puts the computer into sleep mode via a smartphone, the network card may turn off, preventing any further remote reactivation and requiring manual intervention at the device. While these functions are currently present in the code but disabled, Microsoft has not officially confirmed a release date.
