Microsoft engineer claims manual code typing is becoming obsolete due to AI

Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler has stated that the era of manually typing code is coming to an end, signaling a shift in software engineering toward high-level system architecture and supervision. This transformation is driven by the rise of autonomous AI agents, such as GitHub Copilot Workspace, which can handle administrative tasks like provisioning environments, modifying repositories, and submitting pull requests for human review.

To support this evolution, Microsoft is developing tools like .NET Aspire, which incorporates AI coding assistants and agent-oriented command-line interfaces. These tools aim to create a feedback loop where AI agents can start services, monitor logs, and perform re-testing to reduce manual error handling.

Addressing security concerns—noting that some reports indicate AI-generated code can contain vulnerabilities—Microsoft is implementing agent-based vulnerability scanners, such as the project codenamed ‘MDASH’. This technology is being integrated into Windows development to identify and patch security flaws in complex areas like the Windows kernel and network stack more rapidly than attackers can exploit them.
