Microsoft enhances Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild with remote management

Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of its Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild feature through new updates in the Windows Insider Experimental channel. Cloud Rebuild allows for a complete operating system reinstallation by downloading fresh files and drivers directly from Windows servers via the Windows Recovery Environment, bypassing the need for physical installation media like USB drives.

The latest updates, appearing in build 26340.9502, introduce two primary enhancements: drive sanitization and remote execution. Drive sanitization provides an option to securely wipe data from a drive before the reinstallation to prevent forensic recovery of old files. Remote execution allows IT administrators to trigger the Cloud Rebuild process from a distance via Recovery CSP, making it a more efficient tool for managing corporate fleets, reassigning hardware, or recovering devices remotely.
