Microsoft executives deny Windows 95 taskbar was inspired by NeXTSTEP Dock

Former Microsoft executives Joe Belfiore and Brad Silverberg have denied long-standing rumors that the Windows 95 taskbar was inspired by the NeXTSTEP Dock developed by Steve Jobs’ company, NeXT, in 1988.

The debate resurfaced following social media discussions initiated by former Microsoft engineer Dave Plummer. Critics had suggested a design lineage connecting NeXT’s Dock to the Windows interface.

Belfiore and senior product lead Brad Silverberg clarified that the taskbar was developed independently within Microsoft. Belfiore identified two primary influences: the Microsoft Cairo project, which explored a tray-based interface for managing content between applications, and the need for improved window management. The taskbar was specifically designed to solve the lack of clear minimized window management found in Windows 3.1, providing a unified area to display and restore active programs.
