Microsoft expands AI Copilot suite to Fabric data platform and Microsoft 365

Microsoft has introduced Copilot for Microsoft Fabric, an AI‑powered data assistant that works inside the Fabric ecosystem. Built on Azure OpenAI, the tool can translate plain‑language requests into SQL queries, DAX measures, PySpark code, data pipelines and Power BI dashboards, while respecting the user’s existing data permissions. It is positioned as a junior data engineer that speeds up repetitive tasks for data engineers, analysts and business users.

Within Microsoft 365, the Copilot experience now offers two distinct modes. Copilot Chat provides conversational assistance for drafting, summarising and brainstorming within a single session. Copilot Cowork adds an “agentic” layer that can plan and execute multi‑step workflows across apps, using a usage‑based credit system. The two options are meant to be chosen based on task complexity and required automation.
